Here is Paddy’s verdict on David Wagner’s Norwich City, who prolonged Ipswich’s derby agony and underlined their own Championship promotion credentials.

• Angus Gunn            7

The boyhood City fan would know more than most in the home dressing room what this result meant. Commanding figure and so secure under the high ball when Ipswich tried to up the ante.

His assured claim from Jeremy Sarmiento in stoppage time was greeted as loudly as Marcelino Nunez’s winner.

Alert to race from his line in the 85th minute to make a sprawling stop with his upper body from Ali Al-Hamadi’s burst. Made light work of clutching Kieffer Moore’s flick in the 64th minute.

Gathered a Cameron Burgess near post header, and claimed a Leif Davis cross prior to the interval.

• Jack Stacey              8

Defensive work might not be his strongest suit but was magnificent in that second half. Not forgetting a tremendous tone-setting challenge on the dangerous Davis that underscored City meant business inside the opening 10 minutes.

Raced back in the 71st minute to halt the lively Sarmiento. Then nicked it on the edge of his own box three minutes from the end of normal time, before he was hauled down by Marcus Harness.

Usual front-foot attacking play prior to the interval. Miscued an intended cross but still forced Vaclav Hladky to grasp underneath his own bar after Ashley Barnes had rolled the full back in. Choked a shot at the keeper on the hour mark.

• Shane Duffy              7

Looked a touch ill at ease in the first quarter when asked to step into midfield with the ball. Put Gabby Sara and Nunez in trouble with a sluggishness to his passing.

But thereafter his experience proved invaluable. Especially when Ipswich resorted to loading balls into the Norwich box.

Big defensive header won in the 53rd minute with Moore sizing up a chance to attack Omari Hutchinson’s cross.

• Ben Gibson                7

Another who made the most of his experience in the final fraught moments. Clever use of his body to ‘collide’ with Al-Hamadi, after the Ipswich substitute looked to race in behind. Did get caught under the ball five minutes earlier, but Gunn came to the rescue. Halted Al-Hamadi at source in the 77th minute with a perfect sliding tackle.

Then jumped out to block Jack Taylor’s snapshot, as Sarmiento cut the ball back from the left. Another excellent block on Hutchinson as he wriggled into a shooting position in stoppage time.

• Sam McCallum      7

Questions were asked after his struggles on Easter Monday at Leicester. But stuck to his task with Hutchinson, and had able support from Borja Sainz. Teasing chip hit the on-running Spanish wide player in the 57th minute, who tried a first time volley with the outside of his foot.

Another McCallum attacking burst was crudely halted by Hutchinson. Fortunate to escape when he plonked an aimless ball infield inside his own defensive third, that was turned over by Town and ended with Sarmiento lashing over.

• Kenny McLean      7

A derby with no quarter asked or given was right up the ‘Mayor’s’ street. Got back in to produce a diving header clear from Davis’ early inswinging free kick. Drove into the Ipswich box in the 16th minute but showed a lack of conviction to get his shot away.

Right-footed shot blocked in the 37th minute, after he was found exquisitely by Sara. High level of technical execution and courage to pluck a spiralling ball out of the air inside his own half in stoppage time, and then the turn to entice a free kick.

• Marcelino Nunez                    8

A match-winning goal fit to grace any derby. Went for the ‘Ronaldo’ style address of a dead ball a full 30 yards out, which bent and bounced in front of the sprawling Hladky, who could only parry against the inside of his left-hand post.

Composed in those dangerous pockets deep in his own third, and tigerish in his tackling and pressing after the interval. Coolness personified in the 16th minute when he took control of a dicey situation involving Gunn and Ben Gibson to reverse a ball out to McCallum, as Moore closed in.

Excellent threaded ball through midfield released Sara. First free kick attempt clipped the feet of the jumping Town wall. From the corner, attacked Sara’s delivery but his shot was blocked.

• Gabby Sara                7

No coincidence the match-defining spell of this game saw both Sara and Nunez get on the ball in advanced areas.

Tried a 25-yard free kick in the 29th minute, but cut across the ball and it veered off-target. Snapped an early ball into Ashley Barnes, who was levered off it. Then another biting challenge to release Stacey.

Picked out Nunez in another of those pre-planned corner routines. Bent in a free kick in the 36th minute Massimo Luongo was forced to head behind. Lovely disguise on the roll into the Ipswich area for McLean to turn and get a shot away.

• Ashley Barnes                        7

Another who was made for derby combat. Made his presence felt in the opening seconds with Davis feeling the impact of a stiff challenge. Quality switch from one side of the Ipswich penalty area to the other for Sainz. Got a lot of joy in those tracts between midfield and attack to release the likes of Stacey.

• Borja Sainz                7

Bundle of energy and endeavour. Inside the opening minute he forced a home corner when he took Axel Tuanzebe into the corner. From the set piece the ball was only partially cleared, but he was quickly closed down as the shot flew over. Snap half-volley at the back post was blocked in the 39th minute.

Went for the spectacular first-time improvised finish when McCallum’s initial pass clipped him on the back. Nicked a turnover with his pressing for Sargent to power forward but his right-footed shot lacked the venom to trouble Hladky.

The American returned the favour with a gorgeous backheel but Sainz showed a rare lack of composure to lift his right-footer over. Excellent tracking back deep into his own left-back channel won a late goal kick by flicking the ball against Hutchinson, before exhorting the home fans for one last push.

• Josh Sargent                8

Masterful display of leading the line that deserved a goal, which would have been Sargent's 10th consecutive Carrow Road outing on the scoresheet.

Appeared to send tremors through the whole Town backline, but particularly centre back Burgess, who was a touch fortunate not to be cautioned for grappling the forward. Tuanzebe did go into the book when he halted Sargent as he veered away from goal.

Hladky shanked a clearance to him in the 52nd minute, but he sliced his half-volley across the pitch. Went down after what looked contact from Sam Morsy just outside the area, but the referee waved play on.

Came into his own in a flurry of counter-attacking flurries. Collected Sainz’s slip pass and burst between two defenders but dragged his shot at Hladky. Far more precise with the clever back heel that Sainz skied over a minute later.

Subs

• Liam Gibbs (for Barnes, 75)              6

The right side of the derby dividing line for the one-time Ipswich academy prospect. Mopped up after Harness’ swing and a miss from eight yards in the 88th minute.

• Danny Batth (for Sainz, 90+2)          n/a

Singled out by Wagner in his post-match media as being the ‘ultimate professional’ despite his lack of starts under the German since his move from Sunderland in January.
