Kellen Fisher has earned a call-up to England U21s after Norwich City teammate Callum Doyle withdrew with injury.

Interim Young Lions boss Ben Futcher has pushed Fisher up from the Elite Squad (formerly U20s) ahead of international matches against Spain and the Netherlands after Jarrad Branthwaite, Tino Livramento, Morgan Rogers and James Trafford were promoted to the senior squad.

Doyle's injury isn't thought to be serious, and at this stage, he is expected to join fellow defender Shane Duffy in being passed fit for City's trip to West Brom after the current international break.

Bristol City loanee George Earthy and Newcastle youngster George Miley have also got the call from England U21s, with Elliot Anderson, Jamie Gittens and Jack Hinshelwood joining Doyle in withdrawing from the squad.

It is a reward for Fisher's Championship form after establishing himself in Johannes Hoff Thorup's side ahead of experienced and consistent campaigner Jack Stacey.

Fisher has been deployed as an inverted full back and produced an impressive body of performances to earn praise from boss Thorup and City supporters.

“Fantastic scouting, because to find a player with his qualities in a lower division, I can imagine is not easy. So, really, really good job,” said the Dane last month. “And that's not something I have done, or coaches in the building now have done. So brilliant recruitment.

"I think he's taken that position and made it his position, which is also a big part of why we choose him at the moment. He plays like he's been in the Championship for many years, which is also quite positive to see."

"I'm really proud of what I've done over the last two years," he said. "It's not just down to me; it's down to my whole family, who have supported me throughout it. I can't settle on that; I have to try to kick on and take the next step."

Futcher handed Fisher his England U20 debut back in May. The defender has now made six international appearances for the Elite Squad.
