Norwich City have a future Premier League player in teenager Oscar Schwartau, according to head coach Johannes Hoff Thorup.

Schwartau was a cherry on top of the Canaries business after prizing the highly-rated Dane out of Brondby by exploiting a contractual statement to lure him to Carrow Road in a deal worth around £2m

The 18-year-old is yet to explode into life at Norwich, but opportunity could be knocking ahead of the next block of Championship fixtures.

Schwartau is now one of the main contenders to replace Marcelino Nunez after his hamstring injury blow, and Thorup believes that a more advanced role is best placed to extract his creative qualities.

"I have an idea that he will be a Premier League player in the future. I hope it is for us," Thorup said. "Maybe I actually hope it will be with us to begin with, and then he will take a step to the next level for him.

"I think he will be a future Premier League player. When will it be? Nobody knows, but he has the potential to do it.

"He's better when he is just behind the striker. He's really good at these second-line movements, runs into the box, runs in behind and is a runner in his game, which can open up space for the others."

Schwartau's adaptation period is aided by close friend Anis Ben Slimane's arrival at the club during the summer.

The pair played together at Brondby and Slimane has backed the 'brave' 18-year-old to make a success of his spell in England.

"It is an insanely brave decision by him. He has huge potential; if he can redeem it, it could be really big. Of course, he has to get used to a new league and way of playing, but he is brave. He is only 18, but it is a very mature decision.

I am proud of Oscar and his way here," Slimane told Tipsbladet.

"The first time Oscar played at Brondby Stadium as a 16-year-old, he was next to me in midfield. Then, he was someone I had to take care of, so I'm happy to see him in this jersey.

"I can help him, and I am happy to do so. I've been through some tough battles, and maybe I can help him avoid them by making the right choices. But Oscar also has his head screwed on properly, so he will probably manage."
