Norwich City are interested in signing Rennes and Turkey international Bertug Yildirim in their pursuit of a new striker.

The Canaries have identified the 22-year-old as a potential permanent recruit having monitored his progress for a significant period of time starting before his move to France in 2023.

Yildirim, who can also operate in wide areas, played 21 times in Ligue 1 last season for Rennes having previously spent the rest of his senior career in Turkey playing for clubs including Antalyaspor and Hatayspor.

A tall and physical centre forward, City will be hoping he can offer a different dimension to their striking stable if a deal can be sought with the French club.

The striker has also made three international appearances for Turkey, scoring on two occasions. He was also part of their squad at Euro 2024 who reached the quarter finals before being knocked out by the Netherlands.

City have stepped up their interest in strikers, with Adam Idah poised to complete a move to Celtic, which could rise to £9.5m. The Irishman was left out of their squad for Tuesday's Carabao Cup victory over Stevenage as he puts the finishing touches on a move.

The Canaries have been scenario-planning for Idah's departure and have identified Yildirim as one of their top targets. They hope to move quickly once Idah's move is officially confirmed.

It's understood that City have also received interest in striker Josh Sargent from the MLS, but that is now unlikely to progress with the window in the States closing on Wednesday. St Louis, where the 24-year-old is from, and FC Cincinnati are believed to have made contact over a potential deal but failed to get close to the Canaries valuation.

There is still interest in Sargent from this continent, but unless City receive an offer befitting their valuation of their top scorer from last season, he will remain part of Johannes Hoff Thorup's squad.

Sargent has also been linked with Premier League side Bournemouth, although reports suggest they are pursuing other forward targets after losing Dominic Solanke to Tottenham for £60m.
