Norwich City have completed the signing of Ghanaian international midfielder Amankwah Forson from Austrian side RB Salzburg.

The 21-year-old has joined the Canaries for a fee understood to be just below £4m plus add-ons and performance bonuses. Forson has signed a four-year deal with an option of an additional year at Carrow Road and could be involved in tomorrow's Championship opener against Oxford United.

Forson is the Canaries' fourth summer signing following Jose Cordoba, Ben Chrisene and Callum Doyle into the building. The midfielder will wear number 18.

Speaking at the announcement of his transfer, he told club channels: "I'm really happy and excited to come to the club.

"The head coach has worked before with so many young players, it's really nice to be here working with him."

Sporting director Ben Knapper added: “Forson is a talented and very well-rounded player, who will add quality and versatility to our squad.

“He’s progressed through a fantastic player development system, and brings with him experience in both the Champions League, as well as being a senior international with Ghana.

“We feel he is a great fit for us, and I’m sure that we can develop him further and achieve great things together.”

Norwich have utilised a portion of the sum received from Galatasaray for Gabriel Sara to move quickly to sign Forson, a long-term target, and are expected to make further additions before the end of the window this month.

City are believed to have beaten a host of clubs to his signature this month, including Johannes Hoff Thorup's former club Nordsjaelland as well as Anderlecht, Freiburg, Augsburg and Stuttgart after Salzburg permitted him to depart the club.

The 21-year-old began his career at Ghanian side WAFA, making his professional debut in 2019 before earning a move to Austria in 2021, as the WAFA took part in the Next Generation Trophy at the Red Bull Football Academy, where he impressed Salzburg enough to convince them to sign him.

Loan spells followed at FC Liefering and Rheindorf Altach, who were then managed by German football legend Miroslav Klose. His impressive performances on loan saw him re-integrated into Salzburg's squad.

Forson made 23 appearances in the Austrian Bundesliga last season, recording four goal contributions. He played four times in the Champions League, including twice against Inter and Real Sociedad.

The midfielder made his international debut for Ghana against Nigeria and Uganda in March, playing a combined 88 minutes in those matches.
