Three Norwich City players featured as Scotland were beaten 5-1 by hosts Germany in the Euro 2024 opener.

Angus Gunn played the full 90 minutes of a disastrous evening for the Tartan Army, while City skipper Grant Hanley was brought on at half time to minimise the damage.

Kenny McLean came on for Aston Villa’s John McGinn in the 67th minute, but the damage was already done.

Steve Clark’s side went into the game hopeful of an upset, but found themselves behind early thanks to Florian Wirtz’s opener. Jamal Musiala then doubled the lead, with VAR saving Scotland when a penalty against them was overturned.

They couldn’t hold back the avalanche for long, however, and soon Arsenal’s Kai Havertz made it 3-0 despite a string of impressive saves from Gunn.

Things went from bad to worse when Ryan Porteous was sent off on the brink of half time for a poor tackle, forcing Clark to cut his losses by replacing striker Che Adams with Hanley.

Gunn impressed again with a flurry of stops early in the second period, but couldn’t prevent a fourth from Niclas Fullkrug.

Scotland found a small consolation late on when Scott McKenna’s header was diverted beyond Manuel Neuer for 4-1, but former Liverpool midfielder Emre Can ensured Germany had the last laugh when he made it 5-1 in stoppage time. Again there were question marks over Gunn, who got a hand to the deflected strike but couldn’t keep it out.

The Norwich trio will hope to revive their countries chances of knockout qualification when they face Switzerland on Wednesday, but they’ll be underdogs for that game after such a humiliating start to proceedings.
