Former Norwich City loanee Ozan Kabak has shared his disappointment after being ruled out of the Euros through an ACL injury in a warm-up game against Italy.

The Hoffenheim defender was named as part of Turkey's squad for the tournament but suffered the injury in a tackle with Italian forward Mateo Retegui during their goalless draw in Bologna on Wednesday night.

Kabak joined City on loan from Schalke ahead of the 2021/22 Premier League campaign - making 12 appearances during his spell in Norfolk.

The 24-year-old joined Norwich after his loan spell at Liverpool, with the Canaries failing to land other defensive targets in Kristoffer Ajer and Tosin Adarabioyo that summer. Injuries and a lack of form cost regular minutes during that season.

He has subsequently joined Hoffenheim and rediscovered his form, which had seen him pushed front and centre for Turkey's Euros campaign which kicks off against Georgia on June 18.

The defender shared his disappointment on social media after he was officially ruled out but vowed to use the adversity to prepare him for the next major tournament.

"This is a tough one to digest," Kabak wrote on his personal Instagram page.

"I will be out for a while due to an ACL injury and will be missing the Euros. Thanks to everyone who shared their support in the past few days.

"One thing remains unchanged - I’m more motivated than ever to come back and do what I love as soon as possible.

"Wishing the best of luck to my teammates in the tournament, and see you soon!"

Kabak's club also expressed their disappointment in the situation as they responded to the news of his injury and absence from the upcoming Euros.

“This is an unbelievably bitter piece of news and a personal tragedy for Ozan,” Hoffenheim managing director Alexander Rosen said, adding Kabak dreamed of playing for Turkey in Germany at Euro 2024.

“The fact that this dream has been shattered by such a severe injury just a few days before the opening game of the Euro makes the whole situation all the more dramatic.”
