The coast could be clear for Norwich City to sign Panama centre-back Jose Cordoba, with Glasgow Rangers reportedly out of the running.

Speculation surrounding a potential move to Norwich had gone quiet with the 22-year-old nearing a move to Ibrox, but the Rangers Review have now ruled Phillipe Clemente's side out of a move for Cordoba, with City sporting director Ben Knapper poised to move in.

It's understood that City are closing on a deal but that there's still work to be done, although Cordoba has been to Norfolk to discuss a potential move.

He impressed in the Bulgarian First League with Levski Sofia last season, making 29 appearances and earning plaudits for his role as they finished fourth.

City are thin on the ground on the left side of defence, where he plays, after Ben Gibson departed the club as a free agent alongside full-backs Dimitris Giannoulis and Sam McCallum, with a big summer of arrivals expected.

It's been reported north of the border that Cordoba's prospective 'Gers move was set to cost between £2million and £3million, with former Levski assistant manager Tsanko Tsvetanov saying they could be receiving a potential future Premier League player.

“Jose is a player who will have a fantastic future if he goes to the correct club," he told The Sun. "I mean absolutely no disrespect to Rangers when I say this. It’s a massive club in what I know is a wonderful football country.

“But Jose is a player who will be aiming to play in the Premier League in England, and if he develops the way he has, I believe he will.

"I went to see him playing in a friendly for my old club Etar. What I noticed immediately were two things: he was left-footed — and you always notice guys who are left-footed — and how quick he was.

"He stuck out and we took him on loan to Levski in 2021 and put him straight into the team. He had good technique but he was really determined to learn and be better than he was.

"In his time at Levski he improved a lot and in 2023 he was named the best defender in the league in Bulgaria."
