Josh Sargent is scoring at will for Norwich City in the Championship - and believes the key to his form is as simple as playing in his natural position.

The striker netted a brace in the Canaries' 4-1 victory over Cardiff on Saturday to take his goal tally to 10 goals in just 13 games - having completed only two full games this season.

It is the best run of Sargent's career and explains why so much faith was put in him to succeed Teemu Pukki last summer.

Since joining from Werder Bremen in 2021, Sargent has largely had to ply his trade away from his natural position - playing out wide or in deeper roles. He revealed this is the first time since becoming a professional that he has played consistently as a number nine.

Despite not being at the peak of his powers from a fitness perspective, Sargent is pleased his goalscoring run has coincided with an uplift in performances and results for the team.

"It definitely helps when you are playing in your natural position. I've played it my whole life growing up, and I was talking about it with my agents the other day; this is the first season since I became a pro, where I started at the nine and played the whole season there.

"What do you know - I'm actually doing pretty well. I hope I can continue to score goals and help the team as much as possible," Sargent said.

"I'm doing the best I can - I have to give a lot of props to the guys. They are helping me out because you can't score goals alone.

"Hopefully, we continue to play the best possible football and put me in the best possible situations to score goals."

Sargent's goals propelled City to their fifth Championship victory in seven matches to sustain the momentum that has been building in recent weeks.

The American's return has added an extra dimension to their game - managing his fitness will be key to their play-off charge. Even with a brace against his name, Sargent was frustrated he didn't score more on Saturday afternoon.

"Today was a sloppy game from me," he said. "I could have had four if I was sharp but I'm obviously feeling very confident at the moment and very good.

"I'm very happy with all the goals but even happier that the team is firing on all cylinders. Everyone is getting the best out of each other right now, and you can tell in the performances.

Everyone is playing really good football, and I'm not sure you can really criticise anyone at the moment, so we have to keep it up."
