Norwich City new boy Sydney van Hooijdonk is hoping to make Carrow Road his permanent home after joining the Canaries on transfer deadline day.

The Dutchman has moved to Norfolk from Italian sign Bologna on an initial loan deal, but City can make the deal permanent this summer if they choose to.

The striker is hopeful his performances until then can incentivise his new club to take advantage of that option, as he looks to rediscover his goalscoring touch.

“I’m looking for something a bit more long-term,” he said. “So hopefully this will be my new place. That’s the goal for me and also for the club, so that’s the intention.

"The training ground is amazing, the facilities are great. It has everything to perform and work hard. I've met almost all the guys, who are really nice, so it's been a warm welcome."

Van Hooijdonk flew to Norwich on Wednesday with his father, former Nottingham Forest and Celtic striker Pierre, for a whirlwind process completing his loan. He was relieved to get all of the admin out of the way and focus on business, even if his surname does bring some pressure in the UK.

"It's been a bit hectic,” he told official club channels. “But it was alright flying in here, doing all the medicals and now finally everything is done, so I'm really happy.

"I'm proud of my dad's name, he had a great career, also in England. In Holland it's slightly more pressure because my Dad works for the television there, whereas in Italy there was nothing. In England maybe more people know him than in Italy, but most of the pressure is in Holland.”

Sporting director Ben Knapper was delighted to complete his first signing at the Norwich helm, saying: "We’re all really excited to welcome Sydney to Norwich City. He’s a player of real pedigree and potential, having already had some fantastic experiences in his career to date.

“We’re excited to continue that journey with him, and as both a person and player we feel he’s a great fit for our environment and strategy. We can’t wait to start working with him.”
