Bologna striker Sydney van Hooijdonk is among the striking options being considered by Norwich City should Adam Idah finalise his loan move to Italian side Hellas Verona.
The Canaries are lining up a striking replacement before sanctioning Idah's departure, with negotiations ongoing with Verona over a price for the option to buy after an initial loan deal.
City rejected the initial loan €3.5m offer from the Italian side, with other Championship interest in Idah rising. Discussions are ongoing to try and thrash out an agreement, with Italy understood to be the Irish international's preferred destination.
Van Hooijdonk, who scored 19 goals in 39 games on loan at Dutch side Heerenveen last season, is one of the options City are targeting, with a loan-to-buy offer being considered.
The 23-year-old, son of ex-Nottingham Forest and Celtic forward Pierre, came through the ranks at NAC Breda. His performances in the Eredivisie earned him a move to Italian side Bologna on a free transfer after failing to agree a new deal.
He has made 16 appearances, scoring once in Italy - but impressed during his loan at the Abe Lenstra Stadion.
Norwich are impressed with his physical profile and goal-scoring record in the Netherlands. Work is now ongoing to try and strike a deal before Thursday's transfer deadline.
According to reports in Italy, Bologna are happy to sanction a departure for van Hooijdonk after signing Santiago Castro for €11million from Velez earlier this month.
That has pushed van Hoojidonk down the pecking order of striking options. Celtic have also been linked with the Dutch youth international throughout this month.
Norwich is also hoping to strike a deal for Sporting Gijon midfielder Jonathan Varane before the deadline, having identified the Frenchman as an option for the mid to long-term.
Discussions with the Segunda Division side are ongoing, with Norwich unwilling to match his release clause, rumoured to be €6 million. Reports in Spain have suggested that City have seen a bid rejected for the 22-year-old.
Meanwhile, the Guardian are reporting that winger Jonathan Rowe looks set to remain at Carrow Road this month despite strong interest from Lazio and Premier League duo West Ham and Aston Villa.
