Jacob Sorensen needs surgery next week as he bids to overcome a pelvic-related issue that has ruled him out of Norwich City’s Championship season so far.
The Danish midfielder’s last competitive appearance came on the final day of last season in a home defeat to Blackpool.
Sorensen was forced off early in a pre-season tune up against Toulouse before undergoing surgery for a pelvic issue. The 25-year-old returned for a development outing last month, but had to halt his comeback for further injection therapy.
Now head coach David Wagner confirmed ahead of Blackburn’s league visit on Sunday Sorensen has suffered a fresh setback that is likely to sideline him for the rest of the year.
“Unfortunately Lunghi’s problem is a bigger issue. I really feel for the lad because he's such a great character, such a very good human being,” said Wagner. “He got injection therapy two weeks ago which wasn't successful. So it looks like he needs another surgery and he will be out for a few further few weeks.
"At the minute we can’t plan with him. And I can't give a real time frame on when he will be back in training, team training or in contention to play.
“(Is it still the pelvic-related problem?) We haven't solved this issue so far. It's in this region but I'm not a specialist to give you a better answer.
"At the end of the day the first surgery was not successful. The injection therapy was not successful as well. So he saw a further consultant, who advised another surgery which he will do next week. This is at the minute the plan. And then hopefully we get this issue solved.
“I feel really for him, but I had a chat with him (on Thursday). It's a tough period. But like always in life, after a lot of rain, that will be the moment when the sun shines again, and this will be for him as well. And I really looking forward when he is when he is fit and healthy again.”
The fitness news on Angus Gunn (muscular) and Ashley Barnes (knee) is more positive, with the duo set to be back in contention the other side of November’s international break.
“Gunny progresses his rehab exactly as we thought, and it looks like that he can be back in training maybe the second week of the international break,” said Wagner. “He will be back for the first game after the international break. This is how it looks like, but he will not make it earlier.
“With Barnsey, I'm super confident that he will be back after the international break, like we always planned. This was my last information which I had from the medical department (on Thursday) as well. So he is on plan and on track and he'll be back after the international break.”
