Angus Gunn needs to be back in Norwich City’s Championship mix if he is to help Scotland finish their Euro2024 qualifying campaign on a high.

Gunn played a major part in the Scots’ successful mission to reach next summer’s finals last month, but Steve Clarke’s squad are now locked in a fight with Spain to finish top of Group A.

The Tartan Army travel to Georgia and then host Norway, in the space of three days, but Gunn is not expected to be fit for City’s remaining league games against Blackburn or Cardiff ahead of the next international window.

The 27-year-old number one suffered a muscular injury to his left leg in the first half of a 3-2 home defeat to Leeds, and has missed the following setbacks against Middlesbrough and Sunderland.

Young understudy Vicente Reyes’ loan to Braintree ends this week, and along with Caleb Ansen the Chilean will provide short term back up to George Long.

City head coach David Wagner feels Scotland’s double header may come too soon for Gunn.

“No, I can't see this, I can't see that he will be ready immediately from the first day in the international break, because then he would be with us for Cardiff,” said the German. “Obviously if he will make Cardiff then he can go to the Scotland national team, but if he doesn’t make Cardiff I think then it makes no sense.

"But at the end of the day, we now have to see how everything progresses over these next 10 days, two weeks to make a final call.

“At the minute I can't see that he will go to Scotland's international team because he will not be ready to train, and then it makes no sense.

“George has trained very well, and I felt since shortly before the previous international break he had really made a big step. Unfortunately, he was not able to be involved in the games (until Gunn’s injury).

"But he's desperate for a clean sheet, as we all are together, because that is something which would be a big first step for us to try and come back to our quality.”
