George Long is ready to grasp the opportunity at Norwich City after Angus Gunn's injury has given him a run in between the sticks.
The shot-stopper joined the Canaries in the summer on a free transfer from Championship rivals Millwall and has served as deputy to number one choice Gunn since his arrival.
Gunn suffered a thigh injury during City's 3-2 defeat to Leeds that will keep him sidelined until the end of the November international break.
That has presented Long with a chance of game time and an opportunity to lay down a marker to Norwich boss David Wagner in Gunn's absence.
"I came here and Gunny has been playing. Through injury, I am in the team. I am just going to contribute the best I can, give good performances and see where that takes me," Long said.
"I wish Gunny all the best. I always like to think I'm ready at any point should I be given an opportunity - either as a substitute (against Leeds) or at the start of a game. I'm always ready.
"It is about coming in and helping the team as best as I can and trying to make saves. You have to stay ready and you can't take your foot off the gas in training. I've never done that in my career and I've always stayed sharp.
"Then when an opportunity does come, you are ready to step in because you never know when an opportunity might come around the corner."
Long has been part of a City defence that has conceded eight goals in three matches, but has suffered from a lack of protection ahead of him.
Norwich find themselves on a run of form that is among the worst in the division ahead of a crunch encounter with Blackburn on Sunday.
Long is calling on City's squad to stick together and get back to the drawing board to ensure the results turn in the weeks ahead.
"It tests everyone's character," Long said. "Nobody wants to be on the end of bad results. We've all got to dig in and a lot of us have been there in our careers when you have difficult patches as a team.
"We've got that resolve and that belief to just stick in there, keep doing the basics well and work hard. Then things will turn.
