David Wagner has praised Jon Rowe for his hard work after the young Norwich City winger was called up to the England Under-21s squad.

Rowe's call-up for matches against Serbia and Ukraine in the upcoming international break is the latest recognition of a sparkling start to the new campaign and is the latest step of his rapid development which has seen the 20-year-old score five goals in 10 Championship matches for Norwich.

“If you see how good the England under-21 squad is it makes it even bigger,” said Wagner.

"But he deserves it. He has worked very hard, he was very patient in the right moments as well. And then he used his opportunities. Obviously he had some less good performances in this 10 games as well, but he's a young kid and there's still a lot of things to improve. But he listens. He likes to improve. He likes to continue and hopefully he can perform tomorrow (at Coventry) on the highest level again.

“But it's quite important and it's interesting as well how you deal with the situation like this and obviously he has done it very well, still calm with his feet on the ground, which is very, very important, and I think we have a dressing room together when there is the moment where he maybe start to fly and then they take him down to earth again.

“But he's a good character, he knows that he deserves the praise which he gets, but he knows as well that he had to work very hard for it and the most important thing is he knows if he only continues what he has done so far, this will not be enough for the future. He now has to have the moments where you have to invest more and he will do so. Hopefully he stays healthy. We can be very, very happy that he is in our team.

“I am very happy about the steps which he has done since. And now we have to make sure that we support him, that he stays as focused as he can, because this is the most important thing. Don't get driven away by the noise. Stay focused on what you have done and what you will do. And work hard. This is important.”
