David Wagner laughed off any suggestion Norwich City’s stand in captain Kenny McLean will join Leeds ahead of the transfer deadline.

McLean’s absence from the Canaries’ squad who beat Bristol City 1-0 in the League Cup on Tuesday came after reports Daniel Farke’s new club had launched a £4m raid, which had been rejected.

Wagner sought to quell any conspiracy talk around McLean’s Ashton Gate absence, along with Scottish international team mate Angus Gunn and defender Ben Gibson.

Leeds have been strongly linked with Rangers’ midfielder Glen Kamara and firm interest in Celtic youngster Matt O’Riley, in addition to McLean.

But the Scot remains a key figure for Wagner.

“When I can deny anything then it is Kenny McLean will not go to Leeds,” said the German. “100pc, no. No, we rested them and especially Kenny and Gunny because next week they are away with Scotland so I think it was a chance for them to rest.

"Gibbo had a little bit of problem with his calf, but no major issue and he will train tomorrow (Wednesday), like Gunny and Kenny as well.

“This is why they did not come with us. They should not spend the time travelling when they are away for two weeks with Scotland.”

City centre back Andrew Omobamidele, who featured at Bristol City, has been linked with AC Milan this summer, while City may sanction a loan move before the deadline for the likes of Jonathan Tomkinson or Jaden Warner.

“I can't give you a reliable answer (if we loan out players) because the window is still open,” he said. “I am ready to continue with this squad and I'm ready for the fight. If something changed, then it changed for reason. So let's wait. I'm very happy if the window closed now, to be fair.”
