Norwich City boss David Wagner admitted Jon Rowe’s last-gasp 99th minute winner to sink QPR was the perfect way to book a League Cup second round trip to Bristol City.
Wagner was ready for the penalty lottery until Rowe leapt to head home Kellen Fisher’s cross in another dramatic late, late show from the Canaries.
“I was prepared for penalties. Germans never lose penalty shoot outs. But I prefer to take it in this way,” joked Wagner. “Final seconds but a deserved win in the second half. We were the better team. The team who really chased for the win. We looked super fit.
"It is not a surprise but it is nice to see again and again. It was not a top performance, but as long as the game went on we created our opportunities without being super clear or clinical in the final third.
“We were a little bit sloppy in the last pass and that was a bit annoying. We could have created better opportunities. After conceding four the other day to have a clean sheet is good. It was exciting and emotional when you win in the last second.
“Every win helps and wins like this are a real boost in confidence and belief and trust in what you are doing.
“Apart from the late wins I can say it was a performance that was not on the top. Getting through to the next round is the most important thing but if you do it in a way like we have done you can take a lot of energy and belief.”
Rowe notched his second headed goal of the week, after his soaring leap in the 4-4 draw against Southampton.
“Our academy coach told me on Tuesday he had only scored one header in 10 years and he texted Jonny after his header against Southampton and now he has done it a second time,” said Wagner. “It is great that he scores goals at the minute, great to see him as an individual after a difficult season with injury if you work hard, you get your rewards.
"It is nice to see and feel that he is taking on board the information we give him.
“He is a talent, but he has a lot of work to do. Keep the feet on the ground and make sure you continue doing what you are doing. We will support him but we will challenge him as well.”
