Cambridge United 0 Norwich City Women 1
Norwich City got the better of 10-player Cambridge United in an eventful encounter at the Premier Plus Stadium to progress in the Women’s FA Cup.
The Canaries started brightly in St Neots and missed a good chance to open the scoring only 12 minutes in, with Millie Daviss sending her effort narrowly wide after being teed up by Issy Moore.
However, Ceri Flye headed in fellow defender Ellie Bishop’s whipped free-kick only a few moments later to ensure that City earned a reward for beginning the game positively.
City were fairly dominant in the first period and were presented with a good opportunity to double their advantage early in the second when U’s defender Lauren Rouse denied Natasha Snelling’s shot with her hand.
Rouse was given a straight red card and City were awarded a penalty, which Hope Strauss stepped up to take, but home goalkeeper Sophie Shults guessed the right way and tipped the ball around the post.
Forwards Snelling and Lara Densley both squandered good chances to kill the game off in the final half an hour, but Flye’s first half goal was enough to take City through to the Second Round Proper in the end.
Norwich City: Quantrill (c), Flye, Strauss, Bishop, Daviss, Morran, Medd-Gill, Kennard, Moore, Shaw, Snelling. Subs: Todd, Densley, Symonds, Booty, Locker.
