Norwich City Women boss Andy Cook paid tribute to his talismanic captain Megan Todd after the Canaries advanced to the third round of the FA Cup with a 1-0 win over Leafield.
Hope Strauss’ first half penalty proved the difference between the two sides in tough playing conditions at The Nest.
But it was the performance of Todd, who was making her first start of the season, that helped see the Canaries through to reach the joint furthest the club has ever been in the competition.
“Toddy was first class,” said Cook. “She’s been brilliant in and around training. We just wanted to put her in the middle of the park today and her and Eloise (Morran) were fantastic.
“She’s a great leader – everyone loves her at the club and she’s been invaluable.”
The Canaries put their stuttering league form to one side on Sunday afternoon to advance and Cook hopes they can take the form into their next games.
“It was one (performance) that we’ve wanted for a few weeks,” he said. “We’ve worked as well this week as we have throughout the season. We’ve just been as clear as we can in terms of what we want to do, and we’re delighted with the result.”
Cook felt his side handled the tricky playing conditions well with both sides having to battle 50mph winds at points during the contest.
“We didn’t just play against Leafield – we played against the wind as well,” added. “We used it in the first half with Tommo (Tomlinson) with her long throws and they used it in the second. There were a few moments that were a bit touch and go but that happens.
“The girls did brilliantly to see it out and that’s nine clean sheets for the season. We need one more to reach our target for the year so we’re happy with that.”
