Kellen Fisher is the full package, and even Johannes Hoff Thorup admits he has been surprised by the Norwich City full-back’s rapid rise.
The 20-year-old’s elevation to the starting line up for the past four Championship games has coincided with an upturn in results and performances, ahead of Saturday’s trip to Stoke.
Fisher’s ability on the ball and his tenacious tackling is keeping Jack Stacey out of the side, and underlined why Thorup was keen to tie him down to a longer term Carrow Road deal after being plucked from non league in 2022.
“Fantastic scouting, because to find a player with his qualities in a lower division, I can imagine is not easy. So, really, really good job,” said the Dane. “And that's not something I have done, or coaches in the building now have done. So brilliant recruitment.
"I think he's taken that position and made it his position, which is also a big part of why we choose him at the moment. He plays like he's been in the Championship for many years, which is also quite positive to see.
“There are so many good things about his approach to that position, and he plays like he is used to it and been there for a while. That is maybe the most difficult step to take, because often you see players go in and because of that adrenaline, get the chance and do everything they can.
"But after a couple of games, it's more difficult for them to stay in that flow and play with the same quality.”
Thorup is warning Fisher he has to keep his levels high.
“There's a real competition on that right full-back position, which is, from my perspective, really, really good. For the player who's not playing, not so good,” he said. “But I've been pleased with his performances, because I think what he gives to the team is that we're solid with him on the ball.
"He can cover that position in different ways, which is just so important for the way that we play. And I think his aggressiveness, defensively, has actually surprised me a little bit where, you know, we could see that maybe he would struggle a little bit to begin with his physicality, but I don't really think that's been an issue.
"But what we have to be aware of is, there's competition, and Jack is also doing well, and in training, also doing well. So there will be games where we have to rotate because of load, and there will also be games where we choose different players.
"Really happy with Kellen. That's why we play him at the moment and that is why he is an important player. It's not just like a wild card."
