Norwich City’s ability to withstand a tough test from promotion favourites Leeds United is a sign of their progress under Johannes Hoff Thorup, Angus Gunn believes.
The Canaries held Daniel Farke’s side to a 1-1 draw at Carrow Road and ended the game stronger having led Leeds for 45 minutes after Josh Sargent’s first half penalty was cancelled out by Largie Ramazani.
Many felt the game would serve as a barometer of City’s improvement under the Dane after a recent uplift of results, and Gunn is proud of their efforts against a team who are expected to be challenging for the title this season.
"The Championship is a tough league, especially with three games in a week. Every team poses different threats,” Gunn said.
"Leeds like to dominate the ball, and we definitely had spells where we didn't touch it for quite a while, but we dominated with that well. It's a shame that we couldn't get the clean sheet and hold on for a win, but it's a good point.
"You can look at it both ways. We looked very dangerous on the counter-attack, but they dominated possession, but when we look back, we had the better chances. We defended well to limit them, but the draw was a fair result in the end."
It was less than 150 days ago that Daniel Farke's Leeds side dismantled the Canaries in the play-off semi final over two legs.
Plenty has changed since then, most notably City's shift in approach under Thorup who encouraged them to chase the game rather than sitting on a point, something that has been met with positivity by supporters.
That reaction has fuelled belief within their squad and helped maintain a home record that will stretch to 11 months by the time Hull arrive in NR1 this weekend.
"Away from home they probably set up a bit differently to at Elland Road. In the first leg, they sat back a little bit and didn't push as much," Gunn said.
"Tonight, they looked happy with a draw. I think that shows how they look at playing a team like us at home. We've got a really good record here and it's good for us to keep it going. Hopefully we can come back on Saturday to get the three points.
"Every home game that we have, the fans stay and clap us off. They are responding to it really well and that's positive for us."
