Johannes Hoff Thorup will deliver a simple message when he comes face-to-face with his Norwich City squad – impress me.
Thorup’s new players, minus those on international duty at the Euros and Copa America, will report back for pre-season testing next week.
“I haven't spoken to them yet. I think we will reach out within the next couple of days,” he said. “Also out of a respect to some of these guys being at the Euros and having their thoughts elsewhere maybe, which is, of course, understandable.
"But, no, the first meeting will be about the culture that we try to create, the environment that we have, how we train, how the day will look like, what we do, what the purpose will be from day to day, and of course, eventually also how we are going to play and what the identity of the team will be.
“Great quality (in the squad). I think there's a lot of great players. I think there's some exciting young ones coming up and I think there's some experienced players on a high level. You can see that it's important that we have a foundation with some of these experienced players to support the younger ones.
"I think this squad ticks the boxes almost on every kind of player - young, experienced, high potential, great performance. We are well covered.”
The 35-year-old’s reputation for developing talent was one of the key factors in his appointment.
England Under-20 duo Abu Kamara and Brad Hills were just two of a clutch of academy prospects who impressed on loan in the Football League, but Thorup is not heaping any extra pressure on his unproven youngsters when they return for pre-season.
“I prefer to tell them that they are part of the squad, actually, then we find out, like with all the other players, the closer we get to the first game of the season I’ll have a picture of how the squad will look like,” he said. “But my message to them will be that now they're here and, of course, do whatever you can to show your best in training, show your best every day.
"But your feeling and your attention should be you are at Norwich City, and you're here to perform and show what you can do. You're here to compete for a position in the starting 11 for the first match of the season.”
