Former Norwich City centre-back Timm Klose has announced his retirement from professional football.

The 36-year-old, who became a fan favourite during his time at Carrow Road, last played for Swiss giants FC Basel's under-21s as a link between coaching staff and squad, but saw his one-year deal come to an end this summer.

Four months later the once-Swiss international has called time on his career in a statement on his personal Instagram page, saying: "That’s it, folks. After many years, a great journey is coming to an end. It hasn’t always been all rainbows and sunshine, but even the hard and rocky times have shaped me into who I am today.

"I would like to thank my family and friends who have always supported me, [agency] Giallanzasport, who has opened doors for me and has always been by my side, no matter what the situation!

"The biggest thank you goes to my wife, who has absorbed every situation, every mood and supported me through every low and every high from the beginning.

"Last but not least, thanks to all the clubs who had the courage to sign me: Basel, Thun, Nurnberg, Wolfsburg, Norwich City and Bristol City. I have always given everything for them and tried to leave my heart on and off the pitch.

"Playing for Switzerland, representing my country, has filled me and my family with great pride, it was wonderful, thank you! Now it’s time for a change and I’m really looking forward to be working on all the projects I have already started. What an exciting journey!

"Until we meet again… Love, Timm."

Klose spent more than five years at Norwich after joining the club from Wolfsburg in the January of 2016, impressing initially in the Premier League but failing to prevent one of two relegations he experienced in yellow and green.

Injuries blighted his latter years in Norfolk, but he still claimed title-winning promotion back to the top flight with Daniel Farke's side in 2019. Among those who responded to his announcement were stars of that promotion, including Ben Godfrey, Jamal Lewis and Emi Buendia.

Current City winger Christian Fassnacht also sent a message of appreciation to his compatriot, as did Alex Tettey, Sam McCallum and Max Aarons.
