Kenny McLean wants to remain at Norwich City despite fevered speculation over his future at Carrow Road this summer.
Both Rangers, McLean’s boyhood club, and newly relegated Sheffield United have been linked with potential swoops for the 32-year-old in this transfer window.
That has coincided with plenty of changes at City with Johannes Hoff Thorup replacing David Wagner in May and sporting director Ben Knapper stating his clear objective to integrate more youth into the first team.
McLean, who made his first pre-season appearance in the final game of City’s Belgian tour against Standard Liege earlier this afternoon, was subject to similar links last summer with Daniel Farke’s Leeds, but opted instead to commit his future to the Canaries through a new long term contract.
That deal still has two years plus a year’s option left to run – and McLean believes that shows his commitment to the City cause as he made clear his desire to remain in Norfolk.
“I don’t think that I need to speak too much on it, to be honest, in terms of if it’s true or not. It isn’t affecting me at all,” McLean said on the speculation.
“I’m here, I want to be here and I’ll continue to be here. I’m looking forward to Oxford. I’ve always had a good relationship with the fans and I’ll continue that for the next couple of years.
“I hope [the contract] does speak volumes. It was a pretty similar situation last year when there was talk and I committed my future to the football club. The football club also committed to me. I don’t see why that would change.”
That interest from Rangers is thought to be genuine, but never to the extent where an exit for McLean was imminent up to this point.
Thorup is expected to hone in his squad after a thorough assessment period in the opening half of their pre-season campaign as their preparations for the start of the Championship campaign ramp up.
City are next in action next Friday against Bundesliga Two side Magdeburg at Carrow Road before a trip to Austria.
