Norwich City are poised to add teenage Benfica left-back Guilherme Montoia to their development squad.

The 19-year-old has left the Portuguese side after a 13-year association and work is ongoing to conclude a deal that would see him link up with Alan Neilson's under-21 group.

Montoia turned down the offer of a new contract at the Estadio da Luz in favour of a move to Norfolk to continue his development.

The Portugal under-20 international made 29 appearances for Benfica's youth side last season - scoring on two occasions.

Norwich have already made a series of signings for their development set-up including Vicente Reyes, Kellen Fisher, Gabe Forsyth and, most recently, Emmanuel Adeboyega who signed from Irish side Drogheda United.

Fisher and Reyes have been handed squad numbers after impressing boss David Wagner in pre-season.

Norwich currently have Dimitris Giannoulis, who has entered the final 12 months of his deal at Carrow Road, and Sam McCallum as their first-team left-back options.

Montoia has spent 13 years with Benfica having progressed through the ranks after joining from GD Coruchense in 2010/11. He signed his first professional deal with the club back in 2020 aged just 16.

The defender announced his exit from Benfica with an emotional post on his personal Instagram account writing: "After 13 years, I close a special chapter in my life with immense gratitude.

"I say goodbye to the club that welcomed me so well, to the club of my heart. I take with me the love and teachings of all the people I've come across over the years that made me a better person and a better athlete.

"Thank you all, thank you Benfica! See you soon."
