Plymouth boss Steven Schumacher did not have to think twice when Bali Mumba was offered to the Pilgrims, after the former Norwich City loanee’s huge impact.

Mumba completed a permanent move to Home Park this month, and made it clear he wanted a reunion with the Championship new boys.

City chief David Wagner admitted Kellen Fisher’s progress, and Mumba’s desire to play at wing back, were factors in sanctioning a transfer for last season’s League One young player-of-the-year.

"I was in contact with his agent over the summer,” said Schumacher. “I had spoken to Bali a couple of times. I spoke to his agent over another player and I was telling him about what we are thinking this year.

"Then he called me a few days later and said would we be interested in taking Bali back as another loan player. And I said yes, 100pc.

"He said 'What about if you could buy him?' I said yes, 100pc because we knew we had funds there available to bring in some players.

"Once we said we could do the deal we got to work on it. Andrew (Parkinson, Argyle chief executive officer) negotiated it with the people at Norwich's end, and Neil (Dewsnip, director of football) did the same.

"I spoke to Bali and convinced him that this was the right place for him to come. He didn't take loads of convincing because he enjoyed his time here and had a good experience so I didn't have to sell the club to him.

"He knew all about that. It was a bit more how we see him playing for us, the way we see his role and how he can develop for us.

"He's another young player that has done incredibly well but, the same with Morgan (Whittaker), I think he has got loads of room to improve.

"I showed him areas of his game that we think we helped him with last season, and where we think we can improve him further."

The Plymouth chief insists Mumba can operate in a number of different roles - including full back.

"We know he can play wing-back, he did that right wing-back or left wing-back role last season, he was outstanding,” he said, quoted by the Plymouth Herald.

"I think he can play as an eight in midfield, he has got the quality to go and play in there, he can play in wide areas and he can play as a full-back.

"I know some people will say Bali's defensive qualities isn't his strongest point but actually his data was quite good last year.

"His defensive work was good predominantly. He had times where he did switch off and it cost us but he was a young player and they make mistakes, and that's what happens. It's my job to try and help him improve in those areas."
