David Wagner believes Norwich City is on the right track for the Championship kick-off, but wants another positive signal in Tuesday’s Austrian friendly against Toulouse (KO 3pm UK).
The reigning French Cup winners provide the opposition in a three-part friendly at FC Kufstein, with the opening 40 minutes set to be played behind closed doors.
Christian Fassnacht in poised to make his debut in Kufstein, after completing his move from Young Boys to link up with old boss Wagner.
The German's squad are unbeaten in pre-season, and the City boss was delighted with previous trips to Germany and the Netherlands.
City are now spending eight days at their Scheffau base in southern Austria to fine tune preparations ahead of the opening league game against Hull City on August 5.
“A lot of steps to go, nobody should get me wrong. A lot of work to do here in Austria as well but with the feeling that we have a squad together who really like to do the hard yards,” he said.
“I said this to the guys before, I don't like pre-season test matches which are not competitive. This is why we've chosen the opponents we have chosen.
“Obviously perhaps the first two were not as competitive as the other ones. But this is what I like to have. I don't like to have games where you win 10-0 or whatever. I like to have competitive games, because you have to test yourself.
"So from my point of view against the good sides, on the physical side, or the tactical side, they ask you questions, and we have to find answers.
“We look very organised, very well set up in the defensive period in these last games, not only in Holland, but maybe that game was a further step because of the quality of the opponent.
"We created some good moments as well offensively, and this game gave me everything to know we have taken the next step.”
Gabby Sara is in line for his first outing of the summer after an appendix operation.
Both Milot Rashica and Max Aarons are part of the Canaries' touring party in Austria, after returning to the club at the end of last week.
