Borja Sainz will miss the first three months of Norwich City's Championship season with ankle ligament damage.

City head coach David Wagner confirmed the recent Spanish signing suffered the injury on Friday afternoon at Colney, speaking after Saturday's 6-1 friendly win at King's Lynn Town.

Wagner feels Sainz will not require surgery but is expected to be out until October. The 22-year-old winger was the club's fourth senior addition this summer when he completed a free transfer move from Turkey.

The Canaries begin their Championship season against Hull City on August 5.

"Unfortunately it is a serious one," said Wagner. "In the second session yesterday (Friday) he conceded a serious ligament injury in his ankle. He will be out until October. The first serious injury of his career.

"It is a blow for all of us. Especially for him. He was very sad and we support him as good as we can. He really impressed in the first two days of training. Now we have to take it on the chin, work with it, and make sure we can support him to come back as strong as he can.

"We will do this. Even if it is anything but nice. (Does he need surgery?) This is not 100pc decided. But it looks not, and this would not change the timeframe anyway. He will be back in October.

"For him, this is his first serious injury and so he is a little nervous about how to deal with it but I have more than enough trust in our medical department they know how to deal with it, and make the right decisions."

Wagner had already indicated after the opening pre-season friendly win at Barnet he was still in transfer market for reinforcements in wide areas.

"He will come back for us and we will make him ready," said the City chief. "Injuries are part of the game. It is not the start he wanted as a new signing. What does it mean for the window? Obviously I said before, and this counts after this incident as well, we have an eye on the market.

"I am quite sure the squad will not be the same as now, when the window closes, but this will not be because of the injury. Borja is back in October and there is a massive amount of the season left to play from there."
