Borja Sainz ticks all the boxes for David Wagner, and the Norwich City head coach is urging the rest of his wide boys to take note.

The Spaniard could be in line for a first appearance since sealing a free transfer move from Turkey in this weekend’s pre-season derby friendly at King’s Lynn Town.

The 22-year-old clocked up impressive personal numbers last season, despite Giresunspor’s Super Lig relegation, and Wagner is excited to see what damage he can inflict on the Championship.

“He is a good age, it was a free transfer and we were keen to get him and add him to our squad,” he said. “A tactical footballer who likes to play in between the lines and can drive forward, score goals, makes intelligent runs and who has speed.

"When you score the number of goals and assists he did in the Turkish league, and you compare that with Milot (Rashica) who was at a club in the same league who are a stronger team last season, it says it all.

"I saw him at testing on Monday, then first time working on the grass on Tuesday and everything I see, and when I speak to him, excites me. We have to make sure he settles in and bonds with the group.”

Rashica is expected to move on this summer, but Wagner still had four wingers on display even without Sainz for the opening friendly at Barnet.

“In terms of numbers it looks good. But now those players need to show in pre-season that it is not only numbers, but quality which can be a strength for us,” he said. “(Przemyslaw) Placheta and (Jon) Rowe did not play for a long period. (Christos) Tzolis came back in a different shape but it is now up to them.

"They have six weeks of pre-season and then we have to see what they are really capable of delivering, and how they can help us. if they can do what I hope they can do then I am the happiest man on the planet.

"It is up to us to support them, of course, and make them as fit as possible, and then they must show us their quality.”
