Norwich City goalkeeper Angus Gunn has been backed to thrive as he prepares to face off against Manchester City treble-winner Erling Haaland when Scotland meet Norway later this month.
Craig Gordon has played over 70 times for Scotland and was one of the experienced shot stoppers that Gunn has been drafted in to replace after the Hearts man suffered a nasty leg break last summer.
Gunn's call-up came after extensive conversations with manager Steve Clarke and impressing between the sticks at Norwich, where he has won the race to be number one ahead of experienced keeper Tim Krul.
After impressing in his first two international matches against Cyprus and Spain, keeping two clean sheets in the process, City's keeper is now preparing to face Haaland and his Norwegian teammates next month.
Gordon is backing Gunn to come through that test but expects he will be busier than was the case in the last international matches.
“It’s been a great start for him," Gordon told the Scotsman. "He probably had a couple of fairly comfortable games which was nice for him to start with.
“When you’re going into a new team that’s exactly what you’re looking for. He’s still got to bed in and get to the know the guys playing in front of him so it was an ideal start.
“Now I think we’ll need him for these next two games, away to Norway in a really tough fixture and then Georgia at home. I think we might need him to make some saves at some point. But it’s been a good start and hopefully he can continue that and take things from there.”
Scotland will continue their European Championship qualifying campaign away to Norway on Saturday before facing Georgia at Hampden Park next Tuesday.
They currently top the group after two matches - but have plenty of work to do to book their place in next summer's competition.
Focus will be key - and Gordon is keen to stress the importance of not overthinking Haaland's presence but preparing normally to ensure they limit the opportunities created for the Manchester City man.
“If we think too much about Haaland then [Martin] Odegaard might stick one in!” Gordon warned. “Listen, we know Haaland is a threat. That will be brought up in the meetings with the management looking at where they usually score their goals from.
“The thing about him is that he can virtually score them from anywhere. He can hit long range shots, score headers as well as scoring tap-ins and rebounds as well. So we know he’s a threat from all over the pitch.
“It’s not just the goalkeeper who will be thinking about that. There will the team aligned on what they have to do to defend against him. Norway have other qualities too so the lads will need to be ready for however they play and whoever plays in their forward areas."
