Norwich City midfielder Gabriel Sara has been voted by fans as the Canaries' player of the season for 2022-23, the club have announced.

Scottish international Kenny McLean finished second, while Max Aarons came third.

Sara signed for the Canaries from Brazilian side Sao Paulo for an initial £6million in the summer, registering seven goals and four assists in his 42 appearances so far.

He'll be presented with the Barry Butler Memorial Trophy ahead of Monday's game against Blackpool, City's final game of the season.

The 23-year-old struggled with injury upon arrival at Carrow Road, completing rehabilitation from an ankle issue before making his debut under Dean Smith in August's 1-1 draw with Wigan Athletic.

He scored vital goals in recent wins over Millwall and Blackburn Rovers, as well as an impressive volley against Huddersfield as he scored three goals in four games earlier this year.

McLean and Aarons have made 85 appearances between them this term, with the former ruled out for the season in April due to a knee injury.

Sara said of the award: "I’m really happy with this. I wasn’t expecting it, I had a tough start in Norwich but now I’m feeling good and I’m really, really happy with being the player of the season.

"I came and I had my injury, and everything for me was new; the language, the food, the weather. Everything was new for me, and the beginning was tough, really tough. The football is quite different as well.

"Now, after a year, I feel really part of Norwich, and really part of this team.

"I just enjoy playing, and being on the pitch. I play wherever they choose for me, because I like playing football, and I love being on the pitch.

"I want to say thank you to everyone that voted for me, I’m very happy with it. It’s really special (to be chosen by the fans), they always support us and they are very special to me. This now makes them even more special to me."
