Norwich City full-back Sam McCallum insists there’s still competition for places at Carrow Road, despite the Canaries’ growing injury crisis.

McCallum and fellow left-back Dimitris Giannoulis have interchanged throughout the season, which is the 22-year-old’s first since returning from consecutive loans at Coventry and QPR.

Giannoulis was withdrawn for McCallum in the first half of Wednesday’s draw with the Hoops, but will be hopeful of a return for tomorrow’s meeting with Swansea City.

Assessing his season so far, McCallum said: “There’s been a lot of ups and downs, obviously with the injury, and then Dimi (Giannoulis) had an injury as well, so I feel like we’ve sort of been on the same page. I got injured the game after he did.

“The competition’s there between me and Dimi, we’re still fine, it’s still a healthy relationship between us, we’re just both fighting for that one spot.

“Only 11 players can play at the end of the day.”

Experienced operators Grant Hanley, Ben Gibson and Kenny McLean are missing from the spine of the team after their own injuries, with a young team entrusted with recent fixtures.

Head coach David Wagner still found room to make two changes ahead of that trip to West London, however, as well as six in-game substitutions.

“Obviously we miss the boys, but everyone that’s been put in has fought for their lives really,” McCallum continued.

“We’re still fighting for positions, we’ve still got positions that can be changed, obviously I changed for Dimi today. Everyone on the pitch wants to fight for their shirt still, even with the missing players.

“We’ve got the fight going, and the effort is second to nothing. We’re creating chances, it’s not like we’re not creating chances, we are creating the chances, we’re just struggling to finish them at the moment.

“We could be in a worse position where you’re not creating any chances, so we’re nearly there. We just need to get it over the line now. Hopefully it’ll click one day.

“No-one’s given up at all yet. We all need to just keep going, and it’s not over till it’s over.”
