Ex-Norwich City striker Carlton Morris is turning into promotion-chasing Luton’s Championship talisman.

The Canaries went into the international break seven points behind fourth-placed Luton, largely in part to Morris’ career best 16-goal league haul.

The 27-year-old notched a Carrow Road winner to sink his old club in October and has continued in freescoring vein with five in his last eight appearances.

Morris is now a key figure in the Hatters’ bid to secure a second consecutive top six finish. The Canaries’ former FA Youth Cup winner spent 15 years with Norwich, but after a series of loan spells finally cut his ties to join Barnsley in January 2021.

Luton paid a club record fee to bring him to Kenilworth Road last summer, and Morris has already delivered for Hatters’ chief Rob Edwards.

“I can’t speak highly enough of the man, he’s been brilliant,” he said. “He can get hold of it, he can give you a first ball, a header, chest, bring people into play and he’ll press and run for the team as well.

"He’s got so many qualities to his game, goal number 16 now in the league, it’s an outstanding season for him and hopefully that can continue as well.

“A goalscorer needs service, they need a team around them. We keep saying it to those lads, get into the right areas, and we’ve had a few 1-0 wins lately with Carlton being the goalscorer. He’s helped us get a lot of points, it’s a team game, but he just keeps popping up in the right place at the right time, and I can’t speak highly enough of him.”

Luton were denied all three points last weekend by a controversial late penalty awarded to Sunderland in a 1-1 draw. The Black Cats had won 1-0 at Carrow Road the previous weekend but needed Amad Diallo to salvage a point, after he went down in a tussle with Amari’i Bell.

“Tony (Mowbray) has got them playing a good brand of football, they've got very good individual players and are very difficult to play against, so I don't want to take anything away from them, and I'm not saying that they wouldn’t have scored anyway after. But that moment was a killer for us," said Edwards.
