Norwich City have confirmed that set-piece coach Allan Russell has left the club.

The Scot was missing from the dugout during City's 3-2 victory over Millwall last weekend, with head coach David Wagner remaining tight-lipped on the reasons behind his absence.

Russell, who joined the club under Dean Smith last summer, was recruited as part of an attempt to extract more out of their dead ball routines.

Despite significantly improving their defensive record and first contacts won from set-pieces, Norwich were still lacking productivity from offensive situations.

Russell was even named as interim boss alongside Steve Weaver after Smith's sacking and oversaw two Championship matches against Reading and Watford - failing to record a victory in either.

Since Wagner's appointment, Russell's role has been under review. It has now been decided that the Scot will depart by mutual consent to allow him to explore fresh opportunities.

Russell worked alongside Gareth Southgate as England's attacking coach before joining Aberdeen at the start of the 2021 campaign.

He was appointed by City rather than Smith, hence why he wasn't part of the group of coaches who departed alongside the ex-Villa coach in December.

First team coach Andrew Hughes was placed in charge of City's set-pieces last weekend and saw a return of two goals from cleverly devised corners.

In a club statement confirming Russell's exit, City said on their official channels: "Norwich City and Allan Russell have agreed to a mutual termination of his contract to enable Allan to pursue alternative opportunities.

'The club wishes to place on record its thanks to Allan for his work and wishes him all the best for the future."
