We are very fortunate to live here in Norfolk.

From the award-winning beaches and breathtaking countryside to the unique communities dotted across the county and the vibrant people that make them thrive- it truly is a special part of the world.

And today we are taking a moment to turn back the clocks at one of Norfolk's many fabulous villages - Martham.

The community is thought to have Saxon roots, but recent historical enquiries offer evidence it could originate from Roman times or even before.

This collection of photos from our archive spans several decades.

Perhaps you can remember some of the shops dotted around the greens, long gone now.

There's the medieval St Mary's church standing tall and tranquil scenes from around the village.

We glimpse the very first carnival, the mushroom farm and the ponds.

Eastern Daily Press: FIRST OF MANY: Martham staged its first ever carnival in July 1980, and the organisers promised: “It won’t be the last!” The festivities included a dance at which the carnival queen was chosen – 16-year-old Georgina Williamson, with runners-up Judith Newman, 18, and Donna Witheridge, 14. There was carnival fete on the village green, and a procession by more than 80 vehicles – it looks like these onlookers were enjoying the day.FIRST OF MANY: Martham staged its first ever carnival in July 1980, and the organisers promised: “It won’t be the last!” The festivities included a dance at which the carnival queen was chosen – 16-year-old Georgina Williamson, with runners-up Judith Newman, 18, and Donna Witheridge, 14.
