Norwich City loanee Aaron Ramsey has had his time with the Canaries cut short and returned to Aston Villa as a result of injury.

Ramsey underwent knee surgery in December after an injury sustained in a training camp in Tampa, with interim coach Allan Russell saying following Friday's 1-1 draw with Reading that he was expected to be out for "months".

"He will go through the process of recovery," said Russell, "but it looks like he will be out for a few months. I would imagine he now goes back to Villa for his rehab.

"I will have to clarify that with our medical people and then when he is closer to being on the grass maybe come back to us."

A statement from the club confirmed he would not return to Carrow Road, however, where he made 20 appearances in five months. In that time he registered three goals and three assists, including the winner in a 2-1 win at Rotherham and a key assist in the 1-0 win at Sunderland in August.

He was brought in by former head coach Dean Smith in August having worked under him as a youngster at Villa, and had become a regular starter for Norwich before November's World Cup break.

He last featured in a 2-1 loss to Middlesbrough at Carrow Road, and captained England's under-20s during his time as a Canary.
