Former Huddersfield Town boss David Wagner is under serious consideration to become Norwich City's new head coach, according to reports.

The German-born coach, who achieved promotion with the Terriers in 2017, is reportedly a target for the Canaries as they search for Dean Smith's successor.

PA Sport's Nick Mashiter and the Times, among other organisations, are reporting that Wagner is a target for City.

Wagner entered the betting markets earlier on Wednesday and is now favourite with many bookmakers such as SkyBet with increasingly short odds.

The 51-year-old was appointed as Huddersfield boss by current Norwich sporting director Stuart Webber in 2015 and enjoyed a spell of real success at the Yorkshire club, leading them to the Premier League for the first time in 45 years.

A year of top-flight survival followed before he left in January 2019 after a poor start to the campaign - Huddersfield went on to be relegated.

Wagner has since had spells in the Bundesliga with Schalke and in Switzerland with Young Boys, overseeing just 40 games in charge of both sides. The German has struggled to replicate his success at Huddersfield elsewhere.

Norwich do look increasingly likely to look overseas for Smith's replacement, largely due to the costs involved. A shortlist has been made, with plenty of names currently under consideration.

Interim boss Allan Russell will undertake the pre-match media duties on Thursday morning before leading Norwich into their Championship clash with Reading on Friday alongside Steve Weaver.
