Norwich City are chasing a loan deal for Brighton & Hove Albion striker Deniz Undav, according to reports.

Football League World have claimed that the German is on the Canaries' radar alongside Championship rivals Burnley, QPR, Coventry, Sunderland and Blackburn, as they look to bolster their options for the second half of the season.

Undav was signed by the Seagulls from Belgian club Union SG for around £6million in January, but is yet to make a league start for the south coast club after being loaned back to Les Unionistes for the second half of last season.

He registered 25 goals and 10 assists in 33 Jupiler Pro League appearances during the 2021-22 campaign, having arrived in Belgium from SV Meppen, where he impressed in the German third division.

He moved to Meppen from Eintracht Braunschweig, for whom City winger Onel Hernandez played before moving to Carrow Road in 2018. The consistently prolific Undav, 26, spent the first five years of his career with TSV Havelse before joining Braunschweig.

Norwich head coach Dean Smith left the door open to transfer business last week despite limited finances, saying: "We won’t be looking to do too much. We'll look to do something, but not too much at all. I think we've got a good enough squad.

"We've had a lot of players who have been injured, so we've got a number of players back that help us strengthen the squad without having to bring players in."

Top goalscorers Teemu Pukki and Josh Sargent have 16 goals between them, with the Finn netting seven times and the American nine. Easing the burden on Pukki has been a key task for City coaches in recent years, with his overwhelming portion of Premier League goals a worry in previous years.

Sargent has impressed this term but largely from the wings, while back-up strikers Adam Idah and Jordan Hugill have struggled for game time thanks to form and fitness woes.

Canaries finance director Anthony Richens admitted, however, that funds would have to be generated from elsewhere for City to add players next month, telling official club channels: "We believe that we have a strong enough squad to compete and to get us promoted.

"We worked tirelessly in the summer, first of all to keep our club together but also to bring in some players that would maximise the opportunity to get promoted back to the Premier League.

"Having said that, we have to understand that we have injuries and other things going on on the pitch, so we always look to January. As it stands today, if we were to do anything in January then we would need alternative financing, be it through a player sale or other financing means."
