Middlesbrough boss Michael Carrick purred over his side’s performance during their 3-0 win at Blackpool on Tuesday night.

Boro, who head to Norwich City this Saturday, were good value for their victory, given to them thanks to goals from Isaiah Jones, Marcus Forss and Chuba Akpom.

Carrick, who recently replaced Chris Wilder as the Riversiders’ boss, thought it was the complete performance from his side.

He said: "I am delighted for the players, for the amount of effort and how much we've improved from game to game.

"Off the back of Saturday, doing so well and not getting what we wanted from the game, to do what we have tonight...

"We had a bit of everything in the performance: goals, clean sheet, we defended well and looked dangerous and played some really good football."

The former England international was not concerned at half-time that they would let their slender 1-0 lead slip.

"I wasn't worried, no," added Carrick. "I didn't like the last five minutes of the first half and I spoke about that at half-time.

"We were accepting balls coming into the box and not being proactive in stopping it from happening. But we dealt with it ever so well in the second half.

"It was just about not getting too comfortable, which we didn't. All round it was a good night for us. There were so many positives."

Elsewhere, Sheffield United missed the chance to go top of the table as Ben Wiles' strike earned Rotherham their first win at Bramall Lane since 1980.

Wiles' strike seven minutes before half-time gave a Millers side missing six players through injury a first win in five and dealt the Blades a major setback just days after their statement victory over league leaders Burnley.

Watford moved up to fifth, just behind Norwich on goal difference, with a 2-0 win over Reading as Joao Pedro got both goals at Vicarage Road.

The Hornets moved above QPR who were stunned 2-1 by the league's bottom team Huddersfield, the Terriers' first away win of the season.

Swansea could not take advantage of QPR's dropped points as Troy Deeney's 89th-minute equaliser denied them victory in a 2-2 draw at Birmingham.
