Liverpool beat Norwich 5-4 in an extraordinary Barclays Premier League match at Carrow Road, which was settled by Adam Lallana moments after Sebastian Bassong looked to have earned the Canaries a point.

It is not the first time the two sides have played a nine-goal thriller.

In January 1962, the teams met at Anfield in the old Second Division, in a match which would see Norwich forward Terry Allcock score a hat-trick and still finish on the losing side - with the Canaries also losing 5-4 on that occasion.

Bill Shankly's Liverpool were top of the table, captained by Ron Yeats, with Ian Callaghan in midfield, while Roger Hunt and Ian St John led the attack.

The Reds, unbeaten in the league at home at that stage of the season, went ahead after 25 minutes through Jimmy Melia, but mid-table Norwich were level within three minutes when Jimmy Conway shot past goalkeeper Bert Slater.

Hunt converted a cross from winger Alan A'Court to send Liverpool into half-time 2-1 ahead. Allcock then equalised after 56 minutes following a poor defensive header by John Molyneux.

Within a minute Liverpool were in front again at 3-2 as Hunt collected a mis-hit shot from Melia to knock the ball past Norwich goalkeeper Geoff Barnsley. The game looked over on the hour mark when Dick Scott deflected a cross from A'Court into his own net.

Norwich swiftly reduced the deficit back to 4-3 as Allcock's header went in off the underside of the crossbar. Melia settled Anfield nerves with a volleyed fifth goal 10 minutes from time, but Allcock set up a tense final two minutes as he completed his hat-trick.

However, unlike in Norfolk on Saturday, there was to be no stoppage-time drama.

Liverpool Daily Post reporter Adrian Killen summed up the match, writing: 'Liverpool made hard work of it, but if so, defensive failings were the cause.'

Allcock - who had played in the 1958/59 FA Cup giant-killing side after transferring from Bolton - remains the last man to score three goals at Anfield and end up on the losing side.

The forward went on to make 389 appearances for the Canaries and following his retirement, Allcock joined the family funeral business with his son in Norwich.
