Nottingham Forest fan who threw sweet at Norwich supporters during 5-1 defeat is relieved not to get ban

Forest fan Spencer Clay, 46, had just seen his side go 3-0 down within the first 20 minutes of the recent Championship clash at Carrow Road.

Banter between the rival supporters boiled over on Clay's part who, in frustration, lobbed a fruit drop at City fans.

Clay, of St Johns Way, Thetford, appeared at Norwich Magistrates Court where he admitted throwing a missile at a spectators area on February 11.

Anna Crayford, prosecuting, said police were alerted by stewards that Clay had thrown something at City fans.

Miss Crayford said Clay was 'immediately aggressive' with the officer and when told he had been seen throwing something said 'What, like this?'

The defendant pulled out of his pocket a small sweet before he 'immediately threw it across the segregation line into Norwich supporters'.

The court heard an application had been made for a football banning order.

Clay, who represented himself, said he had been going to football matches for 38 years and had never been involved in any trouble.

He said he had drunk more than he normally would and got 'frustrated' which resulted in him throwing the sweet and admitted throwing a second sweet in the presence of police was 'daft'.

He said he felt 'silly' for the nuisance he caused and 'embarrassed' by the incident which has resulted in him being ribbed by friends.

Magistrates did not impose a football banning order but fined Clay £100, ordered him to pay £85 costs and a £30 surcharge.

Speaking after the case Clay, said: 'It's a relief I've not been banned. It's a big part of my life going to see Forest win, lose or draw, but normally lose.'
