Kenny McLean has been charged by the FA following his sending off in Norwich City's 3-3 draw against Middlesbrough on Sunday.
The FA allege that the Scottish international 'acted in an improper manner and/or used abusive and/or insulting words towards a match official around the 87th minute after being sent off.'
McLean have been given a deadline of Friday to respond, but sanctions could include a further suspension from playing and/or a fine.
Southampton defender Jack Stephens was given a two-game and £50,000 fine sanction for a similar offence last month after being sent off in their 3-0 defeat to Manchester United last month on top of his three-game suspension for the original red card offence.
In that case, the FA ruled that: 'that the sporting sanction imposed should be not less than 2 matches to properly reflect the presence of two separate breaches of FA Rule E3.1 in respect of two separate individuals.'
McLean is already sidelined for three matches after being sent off by referee James Bell in Sunday's epic 3-3 draw over Michael Carrick's side after scything down Hayden Hackney in the 87th minute.
After reviewing the footage, City opted against an appeal of McLean's suspension and his ban will begin on Saturday as the Canaries travel to South Wales to face Cardiff and will also include the trip to Sheffield Wednesday and home clash against Bristol City.
A full statement released through the Canaries' official channels read: 'Kenny McLean has been charged following Norwich City’s EFL Championship match against Middlesbrough on Sunday, 27 October.
'The midfielder allegedly acted in an improper manner and/or used abusive and/or insulting words towards a match official around the 87th minute after being sent off.
'Kenny McLean has until Friday, 1 November, to provide a response.'
