Archie Mair's heroic penalty stop helped Notts County return to the summit of the National League table.

The Scottish goalkeeper joined the promotion-chasing non-league side back in January on loan for the remainder of the campaign, reuniting with ex-City academy goalkeeping coach Tom Weal.

Mair has provided depth to their goalkeeping ranks but the Scotland youth international has been forced to be patient for his opportunity. Sam Slocombe, who has been Luke Williams' preferred option between the sticks, was forced to withdraw with injury during Saturday's 4-0 victory over Scunthorpe United.

That presented Mair with his chance to break into the Magpies' starting XI, and he has looked composed in both of his opening two matches. The City keeper is yet to concede in 106 minutes of football.

After Kyle Cameron's clumsy tackle in the box, Mair was tasked with denying Altrincham from equalising after Macauley Longstaff netted his 40th goal of the season.

Regan Linney stepped up for the hosts, only for Mair to leap to his right to push the ball away from goal - much to the delight of the Notts County supporters behind the goal.

Mair's side doubled their advantage in the second period courtesy of Ruben Rodrigues in the second half. It was a crucial save that helped Notts County leapfrog Wrexham, although the Welsh side have two games in hand.
