Norwich City face an anxious wait to learn the extent of Ashley Barnes' injury after he limped out of Saturday's 2-2 draw with Swansea.

The experienced forward lasted just 14 minutes after replacing Borja Sainz in the second half, but was soon struggling and had to be replaced himself by Jacob Sorensen in the closing stages of the contest.

Barnes was named among the substitutes ahead of the contest with Christian Fassnacht coming into the side to replace him, and David Wagner explained that City have been managing the 34-year-old's fitness in recent weeks.

This was a different concern with City now waiting to learn the extent of his injury ahead of the play-offs.

"In the last couple of weeks, he has had some Achilles problems. He didn't train consistently," Wagner said post-match.

"Last week he started, this week we decided that he should not start but he would have been ready for half an hour, this is what we said.

"Obviously then we brought him in because we wanted to kill the game, then he got a muscle injury in his calf. We have to assess it and how serious it is. We will know much more next week.

"He is a competitor, he really is. Now we have to assess it and see how long he will be out."

Barnes was replaced by defensive midfielder Sorensen despite City's on loan striker Sydney van Hoojidonk being named on the bench.

That decision raised eyebrows among some Norwich supporters, especially with the side being held in a fixture where a win would have mathematically secured their top six spot. Instead, Wagner pushed Nunez behind Josh Sargent with Sorensen moving into midfield.

"Nacho was outstanding and we wanted to have a second striker who is really able to chase the opponent down," Wagner explained.

"Even if Nacho already had many kilometres in his legs, he was one of the most aggressive attackers in terms of how to chase the opponent. He is top in this.

"With Lungi in the middle of the pitch, we wanted to close the pockets, and this was the reason why [we made this change]."
